Discovery! Derbyshire archives of medicine, science and technology

Wednesday, 17th March 2010

Join Derbyshire Record Office on a journey of Discovery!

From March through to May 2010 Derbyshire Record Office is holding a new and exciting series of free events exploring and celebrating Derbyshire’s links with the worlds of medicine, science and technology. Through talks, displays and archive skills workshops we will be delving into the wealth of collections held at the Record Office and showcasing a wide variety of fascinating archival treasures.

In March we will be looking into the world of medicine. 2010 marks the centenary of the death of Florence Nightingale, nursing pioneer, who lived at Lea Hurst, Derbyshire. Our display will feature letters written by her, showing her interest not only in the broad issues of nursing, but also the welfare of individuals in her community. Also featuring will be material relating to the Devonshire Hospital, Buxton, founded in 1858, during the Victorian boom in hydrotherapy; medical recipes describing ‘cures’ for bubonic plague; and the medical notebooks of Erasmus Darwin, physician and scientist, and grandfather of Charles Darwin. Through our archive skills workshop we will help unlock the research potential of these collections for Derbyshire’s contributions to the world of medicine.

Wednesday 17 March, 10.30am-12.00pm - Archive skills workshop: In sickness and in health: how to use original resources for the history of medicine and welfare
