The Archives and Records Association ARA
The groups representing the profession, major providers and users e.g. Society of Archivists; National Council on Archives (NCA) and Association of Chief Archivists in Local Government (ACALG) have joined forces to bring together the archival and records community into this new organsation.
This body will cover the UK and the Republic of Ireland, providing support to archivists, records managers and conservators. They will advice users and provide views of the sector to government and wider society. ARA will support the work of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Archives which was administered by NCA and will organise the annual AAC. Though an independent body, ARA will receive some public funding from The National Archives and the Museums, Libraries & Archives Council with specific objectives within the fields of advocacy, awareness raising and sector development.
The National Archives
The National Archives is the UK government's official archive. It has one of the largest collections in the world, spanning 1000 years of British history, from Domesday Book to newly released government papers. Over 11 million records are available to view at Kew, including parchment and paper scrolls through to digital files and archive websites. Others include wills, First World War Army medical cards and Second World War Seamen's medal records.

LMA London Metropolitan Archives
London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) is the archive repository for many London-wide organisations. The archives of the City of London Corporation (COL) and the former Greater London Council (GLC), London County Council (LCC), Middlesex County Council (MCC) and their predecessors are held here. LMA also holds records for many religious, public, business, local authority and other organisations based in London. The dates of items that can be found here range from medieval to the present day, and our collections are constantly expanding. At the moment, there are documents to fill around 72 km worth of shelving! You can find out more detailed information concerning our holdings by looking at our collections page.
DCMS Department for Culture Media and Sport
DCMS aim to improve the quality of life for all through cultural and sporting activities, to support the pursuit of excellence and to champion the tourism, creative and leisure industries.
The Scottish Council on Archives
The Scottish Council on Archives is the lead body for the advocacy and development of archive services in Scotland. They are funded by the Scottish Government to represent and advise its members, and to provide a voice of consensus on all matters affecting the Scottish archives community. The Council comprises representation from local authorities, universities, health boards, national institutions, user groups and many others, and acts both as a strategic agency and a facilitator of activity on the ground.
The SCA supports and promotes archive and records management services across Scotland through a range of advocacy, marketing and development activities. They also aim to promote archive services to the wider public by publicising initiatives such as the annual Archives Awareness Campaign.
Museums Association
The Museums Association is a membership organisation for everyone working in museums, galleries and heritage. The oldest museums association in the world, it was set up in 1889 to guard the interests of museums and galleries. It is independently funded by its membership, which is made up of museum professionals, institutions and corporate members.
Society of Genealogists
The Society of Genealogists offers a combination of research material, guidance and support for those interested in family and local history and the lives of earlier generations. It is a charity whose objects are to promote, encourage and foster the study, science and knowledge of genealogy. The Library is the foremost in the British Isles with a large collection of families histories and other unique material.
MLA The Museum Libraries and Archives Council
Leading strategically, the MLA promotes best practice in museums, libraries and archives, to inspire innovative, integrated and sustainable services for all. MLA are a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB), sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Launched in April 2000 as the strategic body working with and for the museums, archives and libraries sector, tapping into the potential for collaboration between them, MLA replaced the Museums and Galleries Commission (MGC) and the Library and Information Commission (LIC).
NCA The National Council on Archives
The National Council on Archives was established in 1988 to bring together the major bodies and organisations, including service providers, users, depositors and policy makers, across the UK concerned with archives and their use. It developed consensus on matters of mutual concern and provided an authoritative common voice for the archival community.
NCA disbanded in Spring 2010
